History of The Occasional Sloth

The Occasional Sloth has a long and storied history stretching back to the 1940's and a young man with an impossible dream named Dominic Occasion.

Dominic Occasion

This photo is a real piece of The Occasional Sloth history dating all the way back from the 1940s. The young man pictured here is Dominic Occasion, who is responsible for the entire TOS project. It is believed Dominic was in his late 20s in this picture, but appears much younger due to a hereditary condition.

Dominic was a geneticist and an animal lover from a small town in the West of Ireland. He spent much of his early life travelling with his father who was importing cotton from South America. It was during their trips to the rainforests of Peru that he developed his fascination with sloths.

Dominic felt an amazing affinity to the sloths he met in his childhood and thought they might offer a potential solution to the labour shortage affecting his father’s struggling textile business. Through his years of studying genetics, he believed he could make this fantasy a reality, although it was at great personal cost. As you may notice in the first image, Dominic’s left leg is a little peculiar.

It may have taken over 80 years, but The Occasional Sloth is Dominic’s legacy for the world and for the sloths that he loved so much.
